cultural appropriation is the adoption/recreation/theft of icons, rituals, and beliefs from one culture by another without any real understanding of why the original culture took part in these activities.
it can be detrimental because:
- it homogenises cultures with anything mainstream
- it commodifies icons/accessories through monetisation of look-alike products
- it romanticises cultural activities by destroying the original meaning
- it eroticises certain apparel (look up disney’s pocahontas for example)
- it invalidates culture (“who cares if i’m wearing a headress/braids/bindi”? it’s just a “look” i’m trying out… UM NO IT ACTUALLY HAS CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE YOU IGNORANT FOOL)
- it stereotypes people belonging to a certain culture
